Kimberly Ski Hill

Closed for the season because of arson at the top lift station.

Today I decided to visit another ski hill around an hour and half from where I’m staying. This was intended to be a visit to the yarn shop (I’ve almost run out of the stuff I brought with me) and a visit to a new ski hill that I haven’t been to before.

Kimberly Alpine Resort is a small hill by Canadian standards. Only 1,800 acres and 68 names runs. Disaster struck just before Christmas last year and the top lift return was set on fire by some loser resulting in the North Star Quad having to be closed the whole season. This was a total bummer as it is basically the interconnecting lift that services the rest of the Mountain. Currently they are taking people in by cats (not the feline kind) donated by other ski areas or you have to hike in ski boots/skis for 40min to get to the next lift. Today I thought i would give it a go hiking around to the next chair lift you know how hard can it possibly be. But with 15cm of wet snow overnight this proved to be too greater challenge for this intrepid kiwi. I did however give it a go but the snow was like wet sludge and very difficult to ski. I did feel like I was stuck and with it starting to rain I threw the toys out of the cot and decided that enough is enough. I did however check out the town of Kimberley with it’s interesting Austrian/Tyrolean/Barvarian vibe. Kitsch some might say but I couldn’t possibly comment. With a decent dump of snow overnight it did however look very pretty if somewhat slushy by lunch time. Def a place to visit when the lift is back up running and it’s not spring time.
